Faith Formation

Catechesis makes our parish mission statement a lived reality.  Catechesis emphasizes personal and community faith life with parish ministry and through life experiences.  Catechesis is the process of sharing the Gospel, as the Christian community has received it, understands it, celebrates it, lives it and communicates it in many ways.  Catechesis nurtures faith where it is first formed in the family and leads us to Eucharistic celebration!

Faith Formation is a systematic program not merely sacramental.
Education and formation in the Catholic faith is a lifelong, multi-dimensional process (National Directory for Catechesis, USCCB, 2005).  This means children should attend faith formation classes at every grade level until they enter high school, not just when making their first Communion and/or Confirmation.

Faith Formation includes:

Sunday Family Faith Gathering - generally meets once a month from 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. - Families begin with 9:00 a.m. Mass, then gather for prayer, reflections on the Gospel reading of the day and activity.

Saturday Faith Formation - K-6th grades, 9:00-10:30 a.m., meets weekly Saturday mornings at St. Anastasia Church, September - May.

Monday Faith Formation - 1st-6th grades, 6:00-7:30 p.m., meets weekly Monday evenings at St. Anastasia Church, September - May.

First Communion preparation involves two years of classes.

Confirmation preparation involves two years of classes and community service.

RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS (RCIA)

Begins in September and culminates when the catechumen or candidate is ready to resume the sacraments of initiation at the Easter Vigil.  Along with regular catechetical sessions, RCIA candidates or catechumens participate in Sunday Family Faith Gatherings.

RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF CHILDREN (RCIC)

RCIC Baptism Calendar    RCIC Baptism Registration

Is a special two year preparation/journey for children, ages 5 years or older, who have not yet been baptized.  In addition to religious education classes, the child is engaged with parent/s in family prep to welcome the child into our parish faith community.  The child will receive the sacrament of Baptism in the first year, then First Communion in the second year.

ONGOING FAITH FORMATION

CHILDREN'S LITURGY OF THE WORD

Is celebrated during the 9:00 and 11:00 Masses each Sunday from September - May.  Children are called forth with their catechist, blessed by Father, and sent forth for their own specially prepared Liturgy of the Word, primarily focused on the Sunday Gospel.  After hearing the Gospel, children are invited to think about the Gospel's meaning in ways appropriate to their age level.  An activity and prayer, sometimes a song follows.  Children are then invited to bring a symbol to the altar as they return to celebrate the Liturgy of the Eucharist with their families.  All children who have not yet received their first Communion are invited to CLW.  Registration is not necessary

SPRED - (Special Religious Education)

For the developmentally disabled.  The Archdiocese of Chicago offers SPRED programs for different age groups at Different parishes.  At St. Dismas, we offer SPRED for adults 21 years and older.

SPRED is especially designed to meet the needs of the developmentally challenged.  Each person is partnered with an adult catechist.  Groups are small: 3-6 pairs of adult and young person or challenged adult, along with a leader and an activity catechist.  Groups meet twice a month.

SPRED catechists form their own faith community out of which to share and witness to their faith.  Sessions are prepared each year by the Archdiocese and include an activity/focusing time followed by a celebration time, and then a sharing of refreshments and fellowship.

BIBLE DISCUSSION GROUP

Meets twice a month and discuss upcoming Gospel readings and one of the books (or a portion of one of the books) of the Bible.  We explore our understanding of the readings and share how they effect each of us.  Please join us as we make a spirit filled journey through the scriptures.
